Beyond the Cool Factor
An artist's portfolio is their resume. While a design might look cool at first glance, knowing how to critically evaluate the technical execution is crucial for finding the right artist.

1. Look at the Linework
Lines should be crisp, solid, and consistent in thickness. Look out for "blowouts" (where the ink spreads under the skin, creating a blurry halo) or shaky, uneven lines.
2. Evaluate the Shading and Color
Shading should be smooth, with seamless transitions between light and dark areas. Colors should be solid and fully saturated, without patchy or uneven areas.
3. Check for Healed Photos
Fresh tattoos always look vibrant. The true test of an artist's skill is how their work looks once it's fully healed. Look for portfolios that include photos of healed work to see how the ink settles over time.
4. Consistency is Key
Does the artist consistently produce high-quality work across different pieces? A portfolio with one amazing piece and several mediocre ones is a red flag. Look for a consistent level of skill and a clear, defined style.
