Setting Yourself Up for Success
A great tattoo experience starts long before you sit in the chair. Proper preparation helps your artist do their best work and makes the process more comfortable for you.
The Week Before
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water. Well-hydrated skin takes ink better and heals faster.
- Moisturize: Apply lotion to the area you plan to get tattooed, but stop the day before your appointment.
- Avoid Sunburn: Keep the area out of the sun. An artist cannot tattoo over sunburned skin.
The Day Before
- Rest: Get a good night's sleep. Fatigue lowers your pain tolerance.
- Avoid Alcohol: Do not drink alcohol the night before. It thins your blood, which can cause excessive bleeding and affect the ink settling.
The Day Of
- Eat a Solid Meal: Eat a hearty meal 1-2 hours before your appointment to keep your blood sugar stable.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed.
- Bring Supplies: Bring water, sugary snacks (like candy or soda), and entertainment (headphones, a book) for longer sessions.
